How to Get items From Other Libraries

Interlibrary Loans and Document Delivery Services

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Document Delivery (DDL) are services used to obtain materials that are not available in the Frohring Library. They include the provision of returnable items (such as books) and non-returnable items (copies sent by mail, fax or e-mail). According to standard interlibrary agreements, the lending library determines which materials can be loaned, the loan duration, whether it will be possible to check out the items, possible fees, and shipment procedures.

Libraries do not usually lend the following items:

  • entire issues and volumes of journals
  • newspapers
  • maps
  • reference books
  • rare books
  • theses

Who is eligible

ILL/DDL services are available to all JCU faculty, staff, and students, unless they have overdue items or outstanding fines. However, due to budget restrictions, the Library can only partially contribute to related charges.

For the Academic Year 2007, on a trial basis, the Library will cover the costs for the provision of non-returnable documents only. Each thesis student or Faculty member is entitled to a maximum of 3 documents per year.

Costs for the provision of returnable items will be paid by the requester.

Fees and costs

The Frohring Library staff will always try to apply the most effective and cheap solution, and will not require any processing fee. However, it is not always possible to determine the charges in advance: shipment costs, generally quite high, vary depending on distance and weight, and a fee might be applied by the lending library. The cost for non returnable deliveries, such as a copy of a 15 page article, will not normally exceed € 8; normal delivery of a book in Italy costs € 16; international deliveries may exceed € 20.

The Library will communicate to patrons the costs of the services that they are requesting and will activate them after patrons' approval.

Time required
The Library will make every attempt to make the material available as soon as possible. However, no library can guarantee delivery time. It may take from one week (national deliveries) to four weeks to receive requested materials.

Loan periods
Loan rules and periods are established by the lending library and must be respected in order to guarantee the ability of our library to continue borrowing. Renewal requests must be made before the due date expires. The lending library reserves the right to recall their items.

Copyright
Requests for copies must be made in accordance with the Italian copyright law. Libraries are authorized to supply a photocopy for private study, scholarship or research purposes, but the copy is limited to 15% of the total number of pages. The Library reserves the right to refuse to accept a request for a copy if it believes that fulfilling the request would involve violation of the copyright law.

Requests
Before posting a request, patrons should check in the Library catalog and electronic collections. Each borrower cannot post more than 3 requests at a time. The request form must contain all the information necessary to identify the item, and patrons' e-mail address.

Notification
The Library will notify patrons when their items have arrived.

Pick up and receipt
Patrons will pick up the requested items at the Circulation Desk. When they receive the items, they must sign a receipt, agreeing to the conditions established by the lending library.
