Services and Policies

Access Policy

The Frohring Library is primarily dedicated to John Cabot University members (students, faculty and staff). Due to space constraints, all other users are invited to come (except for Midterm and Final Weeks) during the following hours:

Monday through Thursday: 9:30 AM-12:30 PM
Friday: 9:30 AM-7:00 PM
Saturday and Sunday: 12:00 PM-7:00 PM

In order to prevent overcrowding, the Library will release a maximum of 12 guest badges per day. To receive a library guest badge, all visitors must leave a photo ID at the front office. Guests agree to stay only in the Library area, and to wear the guest badge at all times.

JCU Alumni and students, librarians and researchers from affiliated institutions will receive a free pass; other visitors must purchase a yearly pass for € 50.00.

 

Lending Policy

Lending privileges vary according to borrower types.

JCU Students may borrow up to 6 books for a period of 2 weeks.
Students working on their thesis may borrow up to 15 books for a period of 2 weeks.
Staff may borrow up to 6 books for a period of 2 weeks
Faculty may borrow up to 30 books for the duration of a semester.
Alumni may borrow up to 2 books at a time, upon payment of a one-time fee of € 25.00. The loan period is 2 weeks.

Loans can be renewed once, provided that there are no long request queues.

Requests for books that are already checked out can be made on-line, using the borrower's personal account. If more than two borrowers request the same book, the library system will automatically shorten the loan period. However, the loan period will never be less than 7 days. Library users will receive e-mail notifications with the new due date.

Library clients are responsible for returning or renewing items charged to their library cards on time.

For overdue books students and alumni are required to pay a fine of €0.50 per book per day, for lost items they will be asked to pay the replacement cost and a €10.00 processing fee.

The following materials cannot generally be borrowed:

• Books in the Reference section
• Materials that may be subject to damage
• Journals
• Videos and DVDs
• Items on Reserve

 

Reserve Collection

Reserves may be either in print or electronic format. Electronic reserves are directly available through the bibliographic record in the catalog, while printed reserves are kept in the library next to the Circulation Desk and must be used in the library only.

If you need a document that is on reserve, you may search for it in the catalog by course code or instructor or you can refer to the hard copy list, kept at the Circulation Desk.

The normal borrowing period for reserve materials is 2 hours. You may renew for another 2 hours, provided that no one has requested the same item in the meantime. Overnight loans are also possible for reseve items. The documents must be requested one hour before closing time and will have to be returned during the first opening hour of the following day.Short period loans of 7 days can also be set at Professors' request. This special loan will be indicated on the book itself.

Fines: if the regular loan period expires, you will be required to pay an overdue fine of €5.00 per item per hour. If you fail to follow the correct procedure when checking out a reserve item, you will be fined €25.00.

 

Reference and Instructional Services

Orientation Sessions and Tours
At the beginning of each semester, the Library organizes orientation sessions to provide newly enrolled students with a general overview of the Library resources and policies. Brief on-site tours of the Library, with information on the Library of Congress Classification System, catalog and electronic resource searching and other library services are given on demand.

Library Booklets
A series of introductory booklets by broad subjects is available for a quick distribution in the classrooms, upon Faculty request. Librarians are also available to develop more in-depth materials related to specific courses.

Research Education Classes
Hands-on research instructional sessions on specific electronic resources are held on demand in the Library Multimedia Lab, equipped with 10 workstations. Faculty members are welcome to request special classes on specific themes, such as:

  • overview of Library resources
  • how to search
  • how to evaluate sources
  • citing, plagiarism, copyright issues
  • tailored search instruction regarding their disciplinary field

Individual Reference Help
Individual reference help is available in the Library from Monday through Friday (9:00 AM to 8:00 PM).

Information Technology Instruction
Information technology instruction is available on demand, either in the form of hands-on sessions for specific classes, or in the form of individual help for:

  • overview of JCU network facilities (My JCU, Web e-mail access, file and drive management)
  • introduction to Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
  • customized Word and Excel training
  • other specific software (SPSS, Dreamweaver)

Assistance is available Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Visits to Other Libraries
The Frohring Library encourages students to make use of the resources available in other libraries of Rome, and as such pursues a policy of interlibrary cooperation. Visits to the rich collections of the National Library of Art History, devoted to Art and Archaeology, or to other Roman Libraries can be arranged on request.

 

.Interlibrary Loan Policy

Interlibrary loans are possible within the Italian interlibrary loan service (SBN-ILL) and OCLC. When lending, the Frohring Library will apply the following conditions.

The Library will deal only with other libraries. Answers to requests will be posted within 48 hours; requested items will be sent within a week.

Loans will last one month and can be renewed via phone call (+ 39 6 68191239) or e-mail (circulation@johncabot.edu).
The following materials are excluded from circulation:
    • Reference and Reserve books
    • Periodicals
    • Media
    • Theses

The Library reserves the right to recall the documents.

The Library will pre-pay shipping charges. When possible, deliveries will be done by fax or e-mail (always for documents that are shorter than 10 pages) at no charge.

A reimbursement fee of € 4.00 per item (up to 50 pages) is required for photocopies. It is payable with Italian stamps or with 1/2 IFLA vouchers.

International deliveries will be done by courier and will be charged 12 euro (payable with IFLA vouchers); deliveries within Italy will be done by registered mail, and charged 4 euro (payable with IFLA vouchers or stamps).

The Library agrees to send reproductions in compliance with Italian copyright law restrictions. Although digital copies are not allowed, e-mail is permitted as a means of transmission. Borrowing libraries are asked to print the document and destroy the digital copy.

The Library is liable only for damages incurred during shipment to the borrowing library (if appropriately notified). All other damages will be covered by the borrowing library according to the lending library request.
